The new Alexis Tsipras going to stop A/I resorts/hotels. Now I know in the past I have said this is the right thing to do BUT is it a good move when so many other countries have A/I, could this stop many people going back to Greece, could this force the restaurant and bar prices to rocket in the resorts.

Its a hard one this, I believe if the bars and restaurants play it right and dont get greedy they could turn this round into their favour. This new guy really seems to have thought this through, maybe he has worked in the tourist environment. BUT he has spoken about putting extra taxes on holiday accommodation this is a bad idea, if the price of staying is more than Spain and if the price of flights are more costly then would you pay to go there, I wouldnt.

The only thing they need to do now as far as Im concerned is get out of the Euro and go back to the drachma, Greece relies on tourism, if the pound and Euro is strong against the drachma it could make tourists flock back as they did before.

Good luck Greece and good luck Alexis , box clever and you could turn it around, be greedy and you will be in debt forever

I think the location has a lot to do with the validity of this rule. In Mexico, for instance, where we stayed, there wasn't a single other building in either direction, left or right, out of the main gate (fast dual carriageway) until the next hotel, which was also an all inclusive, self contained, 'resort'.
So the option of going out and supporting local business's / restos didn't exist in the first place.

But IMO the answer is to just limit them. Only have a certain %age all inc, and a similar %age s/c, etc etc

Limit them would be my option too. Tenerife has only been allowing the building of new 5 star AI resorts over the last decade. That coupled with the draconian penalties being imposed on holiday lets in apartments, has had bars and restaurants closing left right and centre.

Ditto Mark.

I think you're saying that AI is fine if within a dedicated 'resort' like you mentioned above then i agree.

I think the problem is that non AI hotels have simply moved into AI for economic reasons. No extra package to offer, just free booze and food. no added value in my opinion

Now, everyone who works hard and saves up for a holiday should choose to go where they like and do what they like but the local businesses suffer.

One year we went into the Pirates hotel in SP to watch a show, the show was great but was dispopointed to see loads of people smashed cos they had been on the p*ss all day and not moved from the bar. Please dont get me wrong I love my booze and will be the tippsiest bloke as and when I get to a meet up but it was quite an odd atmosphere.

Me and a mate went to Costa Brava Spain once off season, it was that much off season it was bloody cold but I remember getting to our hotel in the afternoon, walking into reception and everyone looked plastered, it wasnt good, didnt feel good, we were not A/I though we couldnt wait to get out TBH.

The resort was crap by the way, never again lol

Daryn, exactly my point, one year me and the lads went to Cyprus, we only discovered it was AI whebn we go there.

Result we thought, squeeze in a couple of pints before going out to eat or clubbing and grabbing an ice cream before hitting the beach. But like yourself there were people just stuck up the bar, not venturing out once duirning their stay. By 3.00 in the afternoon the place had an edgy feel about it.

Yeah I hate the P it up all day brigade as well. I'm booked all inc at the Mirlos when we go in May but it's just so £ sensible to do it, plus FIL is coming and he is a bit old school about meal times so it'll suit him much better.
But two meals a day and a couple of coffees/cokes covers the difference in cost, which to me is how it should be, we'll still go out and eat some nights, we don't feel at all obliged to stay at the hotel and get the full shilling's worth.

Anyway, Daryn and Mick like me staying all inc so that I can go up to the bar for them and get them free drinks... lol!

yes prefer s/c and go out to have meals, can't really enjoy AI, bored with the choices after a few days.

If you read the reviews they tend to be mixed and after several bad ones , someone always pops up and writes a review I can't understand the people complaining about the food my husband and I could always find something we could eat. That tells me bundles about the place lol.

Third world countries are the places needing AI

In case anyone's wondering... at the last meet up we arranged to meet up in the afternoon at my hotel (Mirlos Tordos) and as the Arsenal match was just about to start (it was on screen in the bar area) we said might as well have a pint or two here? Well Mick wanted strongbow which I had to pay half price for, €1.50, but me and Daryn just had the tap lager, as I had the all inc wristband no-one batted an eyelid...

pretty sure Daryn reckoned on it being a better pint than you get in the bars as well... Very Happy morebeer
