I'm booked up with my friend to go to mallorca rocks in august and we've just been told you need to give your debit card details as a deposit for breakage or damage to the room. We have never heard of this being asked on any other holidays and want to know if it is safe to do this? dont want our bank details to end up in the black market or severely overdrawn

Can I just ask you who said you have to do this, was it from the hotel or just chat amongst friends, I cant see them asking for that
to be honest, if there was any breakages and you wouldn't pay them they would just get the Gardia Civil (police). If you have not heard
from the hotel then I would take it with a pinch of salt, I wouldnt gave my card details and not everyone has a card so dont worry.

I have read some others saying the same thing on TA, I think the hotel may have some boisterious people staying
there and the hotel is covering themselves against these people. Not sure that I would like to go along with it but
UK hotels sometimes are for credit card details before you book.

But they don't need you actual credit card to keep may be worth ringing you credit card company and asking them
but for debit card nobody gets mine

Thats what I would do just say you dont own one, I think its probably only there incase they think you look like you could cause
trouble. Just be nice and polite when you go in the hotel and they may not even ask.
Ive looked at the terms and you are right they do mention this in the terms, if it were me I would rather take a bit extra and pay a cash
deposit and get a receipt for it so its returnable when you leave,its what they do in Ibiza rocks, dont forget to check the room is ok as soon
as you go in otherwise you may be charged for something you havent done. Take a copy of the terms and if they ask for a card just ask
if you could pay a £60 cash instead and point it out to them, but again hopefully they wont ask.

6.4 BREAKAGE DEPOSIT In the Mallorca Rocks Hotel you will be required to provide a credit or debit card for room charges and in case of breakages. In Ibiza you will be required to pay a 60 Euro deposit per room which will be collectible from Reception on the day you leave subject to there being no chargeable breakages. The Accommodation provider supplies a Room Inventory list on check in which you should check against the contents of your room. If anything is missing or you notice anything broken then please report this to reception within 24 hours and we will replace or repair it wherever possible. Please note it is important that you do report this information to Reception as you may be charged.

Another alternative is a Travelex Cash Passport card, its a prepaid card so is not linked to your bank, you put money on it and
thats all that can be drawn from it, you could pre load this card with €60 euros and give that to them.

I think we'll just wait and see what happens when we get there and just give them the money. Worst case scenario I have an old debit card for a bank I'm not with anymore, just hand that over and they won't know the difference not like we are gonna wreck the place anyway :y)k:

It is not unusual for a hotel to take a swipe of your card on check in to cover the cost of any drinks /food signed to your room bill.

Fiesta Jungla took refundable cash deposits against damage from some same room/same sex .The more the hotel appeals to teens n twenties the more likely they are to ask for deposits.Some horrific stories on TA eg of doors ripped off and thrown over balconies into swimming pool. The UK student crowd end-of-term blowouts are an embarassment.Good for MallorcaRocks I say.
