PostSubject: Palma Nova, Sol Mirlos Tordos Hotel   Sat Aug 07, 2010 1:38 pm

The Twin hotels of Mirlos and Tordos, of the Sol group of hotels, are consistently rated highly on TA.
This is mainly due to the family friendly atmosphere of the place, and also the not too near but not too far siting of the hotels. As with a lot of Sol hotels, there is a ‘Flintstone’ theme running through.

It’s just a two minute walk to the beach (the middle of the three Palmanova beaches) where there are banana boats and water sports, and just a five minute walk before the liveliness of Magaluf commences.

The hotel of Mirlos had a ground floor fire during close season a few years ago, so the reception and ground floor bar area of this hotel has been completely renovated and is modern, airy, and bright. There are several large wall mounted plasma TV’s located throughout the bar area and pretty much all sports are watchable.

The old main pool of Tordos

Traditionally, the hotel of Tordos houses All Inclusive guests, whilst the Mirlos has guests on Half Board, although this is not strictly adhered to any longer. Guests can use the facilities of either hotel; there are no barriers or feelings of going to a different hotel as it is all in one.

Each hotel has its own kitchen and the food is rated as good by many of the guests, many who return year after year.

The kids get their own dining area.

The hotels had an external revamp a couple of years ago, and the old main pool area has given way to a much bigger stage, a kidney shaped ‘adult’ pool (so named as it is all one depth, 1.2m) and a long stretching ‘lagoon’ style pool to the rear of the Mirlos, which previously housed gardens and a children’s play area. The children’s pool area has also been revamped and now features the highly popular ‘splash zones’ where water jets spring from the ground and buckets are topped up before spilling their contents over people underneath.

Tordos new deck.

Day time events are plentiful, something for everyone.

The staff dress the kids up for Cowboys and Indians type games, the 'baddies' get thrown in the pool!

There is an ‘upstairs’ sun deck above the Tordos lounge that offers a quieter environment for the book readers and sun worshippers.

The nightly stage shows are amongst the best in Mallorca, with tribute acts, fun and games, and movie tribute shows (laid on by the entertainment staff themselves). The Disney tributes such as Beauty and the Beast being particularly good.

I stayed at Sol Mirlos again this year for the meet.Since last year my room had been re-furbished.All the old-fashioned dark stained wood (eg doors/wardrobes/headboard/dressing table) had been replaced with light oak coloured wood.New Grohe shower over the bath.

Still the same giant pre-historic bedroom non-flat screen TV (not that I switched it on once),still no fridge.

For a 3* I thought it was excellent value. No problems with the food apart from the Full English.I had it the first morning but leathery fatty bacon, watery baked beans, cheap under-cooked sausages.Good choice of cold breakfast items including cold meats, cheeses, fresh fruit.Wide choice of food at lunch and dinner.Their paella which I had once for lunch and once for dinner was as good as any I have had in an hotel. To restaurant standard I would say.

Use of their computers 5 euros per hour.Steep!
No WiFi.

I stayed All Inclusive and at check in paid an extra 8 euros per day to upgrade to Gold All Inclusive. No difference to the food,it's the same for everyone, but it meant I could have branded gin,Larios,Beefeater or Gordons and bottled tonic (instead of unknown gin and draught tonic on the standard AI list) and Strongbow.I did not see one other gold wristband so quite clearly the standard All Inclusive (red wristband) is very acceptable.Vodka seemed to be the most popular spirit but as I don't drink it I can only assume it was good.

I paid £215 for 5 nights single occupancy of a double room with balcony,All Inclusive.Booked in the Travel Republic sale.

I recommend it if 3* is good enough for you.I would return in a heartbeat-and probably will!

Did you not try the fresh cooked omelettes for breakfast WS?

If you go to the cold meat section, you can chop up your own Ham Onions Tomatoes etc/whatever, take it to the fry up lady, and she will cook your omelette with your pre prepared ingredients in it. Eat

Didn't occur to me either.Would have done that because in the Marbella 4* hotels we stayed at in Feb and June this year the omlette chef had all the various fillings ready at his station eg cheese, ham, onion, tomato, capsicum. Is it just me or do Spanish eggs have more flavour than British eggs? For sure Spanish chicken has more flavour. Not as much meat but what there is on the chicken tastes better.Probably not been pumped up with hormones.

Is a restaurant/BBQ grill on the front in Pto Pollensa called Corb Mari.I'll bet del knows it.Right at the start of Pine Walk by Voramar supermarket. In a former life I was in there with my gf and we both ordered half a BBQ spit-roasted chicken with green salad and chips. When it arrived on the plate it looked really scrawny, very small breasts (I always pick 'em! Laughing ) so I said to gf this isn't going to satisfy me.The flavour was superb. As she said it had probably been running around a farmyard 48 hrs earlier instead of being force-fed in a tiny cage.So when I had polished it off I ordered another half(without the salad and chips).Joyous memories.

I have to be honest and say I struggled with the food at the Mirlos. I am not a lover of salad, cheese or cold meats so was a bit restricted to the hot meals. I found many of the hot dishes very salty but that is probably because we use very little when cooking at home. I ended up eating chicken nugggets a couple of times which I usually wouldn't touch with a bargepole. Most of my issues were down to personal taste but often the vegtables had been recycled from the day before and for me this doesn't make me feel that guests are valued. You could see that the peas were a mix of fresh and dried up (inedible). I would not have expected my cat to eat dried up left overs so why is it good enough for paying guests. It was a good hotel in general but I think we have decided that all inclusive is definately not for us when going away minus any children.

Thanks for that info Roamer, We have booked via Sol Melia but can cancel it at anytime without being charged. But its booked up and if something comes along in the meantime we could always change it.

Was there no 'show cooking' Roamer? Someone cooking chicken breasts or pork chops or fish fillets on the grill in front of you?

Yes there was at least one cook seeing to steaks/chops/fish.Also usually a roast being carved. But none when I was in the resto when it was Roast Lamb which I love.Mr and Mrs Y told me it was delish hitting himself

And why do the Spanish call Gammon "Pork".I know gammon was pork once and I like Roast Pork but not Roast Gammon.I got caught out twice with that but I should have guessed from the colour of the meat.Pinky Pork means gammon.
