On another Forum there are frequent enquiries about mosquitos in Majorca. They CAN be a major problem. The trouble is they are not predictable so you can never tell when they are going to be looking for blood to suck ie inflict bites on humans. It is generally known that dusk is a time when they can be at their worst. Also after a period of rain they seem to be prolific. But you can also see replies even on Alcudia Forums where they are a real problem because of the Albufera Nature Reserve Wetlands, saying "went for a fortnight never saw one mosquito - it's a myth".
Do not take comfort in such comments.Go prepared. In air-conditioned bedrooms they are not a problem-too cold for them.So as in years gone by it isn't necessary to take a plug-in repellent unless you are unlucky enough or budget-conscious enough to have taken digs without aircon eg Bellevue in Alcudia.Quite honestly between late June and early September aircon is a must have in Majorca.
I take Jungle Formula or Autan spray as a spray-on repellent.Autan is not nice if it gets up your nose but it won't harm you as much as it will a mosquito. Many people swear by Avon Skin So Soft.I think the wife of our esteemed Forum Friend Dadsbarmy swears by it.
Mrs WS and her friend Stella went to C'an Pastilla last September and on a halfday trip to Valldemossa they were badly bitten while having afternoon tea outside. The previous 2 weeks had been an unusually wet weather spell in Majorca.
PS Mosquitos are also a problem for us here in Cheshire. We live a halfmile from the shore of the River Dee Estuary where the marshes are a breeding ground for a particularly vicious breed of mosquito.Today I was out mowing the lawn and I was bitten twice -one drew blood on my arm,the other was on my calf. And sometimes BBQs are impossible because of the pests.
